Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced a significant initiative aimed at tackling youth unemployment during a visit to a Sainsbury’s supermarket in London, revealing plans for 10,000 work experience placements. This initiative targets communities with high rates of young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET).
“This is a really positive development today,” Burnham stated, emphasizing the need for more employers to offer such opportunities. He highlighted Sainsbury’s commitment as a model for other businesses to follow.
Burnham called for a national effort to address the challenge of youth unemployment, stating, “We have a huge challenge – too many young people are out of work – but it can be fixed.” He underscored the importance of reforming the education system to provide technical pathways alongside traditional academic routes.
The announcement comes amid rising concerns about youth unemployment, with a recent poll indicating that over one-third of young people aged 18 to 24 view unemployment as a critical issue. The Good Growth Foundation reported that one million young people are currently not engaged in education, employment, or training.
In addition to the work experience placements, Burnham acknowledged the ongoing energy crisis, with the energy price cap set to rise by 4% in October, reaching a three-year high. He assured the public that the government is exploring ways to alleviate the burden of rising energy costs.
Reform UK’s treasury spokesperson, Robert Jenrick, also made headlines by proposing a £30 tax credit for individuals who experience long wait times when contacting HMRC, aiming to improve customer service standards.
As the government grapples with multiple pressing issues, including energy prices and youth unemployment, Burnham’s initiative represents a proactive step towards creating meaningful employment opportunities for the younger generation.
