Apple Launches iPhone Duo: A New Era Under CEO John Ternus

Apple Holds First Product Launch Event Under New CEO John Ternus

Apple has officially launched the iPhone Duo, its first foldable smartphone, during a highly anticipated event at its Cupertino campus. Priced at $1,999, the device represents a major evolution in the iPhone lineup since the original model debuted in 2007.

The iPhone Duo features a passport-like design that expands to double its screen size, combining the expansive display capabilities of an iPad with the portability and camera functionality of an iPhone. This innovative design positions the Duo as Apple’s largest and thinnest phone to date.

John Ternus, who recently succeeded Tim Cook as CEO, emphasized the device’s user-friendly design. “iPhone Duo brings an entirely new design while preserving everything you love from an iPhone,” he stated. The phone is set to be available for purchase on October 23.

Event Highlights and Product Features

The launch event, titled “Surprise and Shine,” commenced at 10 AM Pacific Time, showcasing not only the iPhone Duo but also the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max models, starting at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively. Apple highlighted the integration of AI features across its product range, including a new Siri AI capable of interacting with over 300,000 third-party apps.

Among the standout features of the new iPhones is the Apple Reference Image, a mechanism that verifies images captured by the iPhone camera, ensuring they are not AI-generated. This feature aims to enhance the authenticity of digital photography.

Battery Life and Market Context

Apple executives touted significant advancements in battery life, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max boasting up to 45 hours and the iPhone 18 Pro offering 36 hours. Despite the excitement surrounding the iPhone Duo, demand for foldable devices remains limited compared to traditional smartphones, as reflected in Apple’s recent earnings reports.

In addition to the iPhone Duo, Apple introduced updates to its Apple Watch and AirPods lines. The new AirPods, now in their fifth generation, promise 50% better noise cancellation and a starting price of $129. The latest Apple Watch models, Series 12 and Ultra 4, incorporate advanced health tracking features, including a new “Health Age” metric.

Looking Ahead

As Ternus embarks on his leadership journey, he expressed enthusiasm for the future of Apple in a note to employees. “I’m honored to be stepping into this role at what is truly the greatest company in the world,” he wrote, hinting at more groundbreaking products on the horizon.
