Brazilian court accuses Adele of plagiarism

"It was worse than giving birth," Adele admits she partially lost her hearing

It seems that the year is not going well for the British pop diva Adele. The celebrity was accused of plagiarism and banned from distributing her famous 2015 song Million Years Ago.

The Guardian reports that Adele was sued by Brazilian composer Toninho Geraes, who requested to reconsider the similarity of the artist’s composition and music to the song Mulheres, which is considered an iconic song in Brazil.

After the review, the Rio de Janeiro court sided with the composer and decided to ban the distribution of the 36-year-old singer’s song and remove it from all music platforms worldwide.

At the same time, Toninho Geraes is demanding $160 thousand in moral compensation because, according to him, he lost a considerable amount of royalties due to plagiarism.

In addition, the Brazilian branches of Sony and Universal Music Group face a fine of $8,000 “for each case” of non-compliance with distribution requirements.” However, music companies can still appeal this claim.

Sony, Universal Music Group, and Adele have not yet commented on the Brazilian court’s decision.
