One of Germany’s largest banks, Deutsche Bank AG, plans to launch its own digital asset storage service in 2026. The bank has enlisted the technology division of the Bitpanda crypto exchange to develop this offering. It will continue its collaboration with Swiss provider Taurus SA, according to Bloomberg.
The corporate division of Deutsche Bank, which first announced plans to create a crypto service back in 2022, is now actively working on its implementation. The partnership with specialized companies such as Bitpanda Technology Solutions and Taurus aims to accelerate development and ensure a high technological level for the future service.
It is worth noting that Deutsche Bank is one of Taurus’ investors, having participated in the company’s $65 million funding round in 2023.
A favorable environment for digital assets
Deutsche Bank’s decision to enter the cryptocurrency storage market comes amid growing interest in digital assets from large financial institutions. This is facilitated by the emergence of new regulatory rules in Europe and a more favorable environment in the US, where supporters of cryptocurrencies have been appointed to key positions following Donald Trump’s election.
In addition to custodial services, the German bank is also actively exploring opportunities to work with stablecoins and tokenized deposits. This could include both issuing its own token and joining broader industry initiatives.
What are custodial services for cryptocurrencies, and why do banks need them?
Custody services for cryptocurrencies involve storing and protecting digital assets on behalf of clients. The main task of a custodian is to securely store private cryptographic keys that provide access to cryptocurrencies. The loss of these keys means the irretrievable loss of the assets themselves, so their protection is critically important.
Such services are a necessary infrastructure for institutional investors (pension funds, investment companies, hedge funds), which, by law and internal rules, cannot simply store assets on a “flash drive.” They are required to use the services of qualified custodians who guarantee the highest level of security, insurance, and regulatory compliance.
For large traditional banks such as Deutsche Bank, providing custodial services is a logical step. It allows them to enter a new, profitable market and offer their existing large clients a secure and regulated way to invest in digital assets.
