The Disney+ streaming platform has begun developing a new live-action series centered on Casper the Friendly Ghost, envisioning a modern reinterpretation of the classic tale with a darker narrative tone. According to Deadline, the project is in its early stages. It is being compared to the series ‘Wednesday,’ known for its darker re-imagining of a familiar universe. Robert Letterman and Hilary Winston, creators of the Disney+ series ‘Goosebumps,’ are taking the helm of this new project, with Letterman serving as the director. Steven Spielberg, who previously served as an executive producer for the 1995 film ‘Casper,’ will also be part of the team. The series is being produced by DreamWorks Animation TV and Universal Studio Group’s division, UCP. Reports state that the series will heavily rely on computer-generated imagery to create Casper’s appearance, similar to the approach used in the original feature film. Casper first appeared in animated shorts by Famous Studios during the 1940s and 1950s, subsequently evolving into a Harvey Comics character and appearing in various animated series and the 1995 movie.
