Dyson has launched its latest innovation, the CameraJet toothbrush, priced at £420, which offers users the ability to stream live footage of their teeth while brushing. This high-tech device aims to transform oral hygiene practices by providing real-time insights into dental care.
At a recent event in Paris, James Dyson, the company’s founder and chief engineer, described the CameraJet as part of a ‘complete dental system’ that includes specially formulated toothpaste and mouth rinse, each retailing for £8.50. The toothbrush features a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera and an anti-gravity mouthwash tank, designed to enhance the brushing experience.
The integrated camera functions as a high-quality endoscope, allowing users to view their mouth in real-time through the MyDyson app. This feature aims to provide feedback on brushing techniques and help users improve their oral health.
Dyson’s engineers, who have spent over a decade researching oral care, developed the toothbrush after extensive testing, including the creation of a ‘proxy plaque’ for accurate assessment of plaque removal. Dyson noted that traditional flossing is often neglected, and the CameraJet addresses this by using machine learning and precision fluid dynamics to detect plaque and deliver targeted mouth rinse bursts.
The CameraJet claims to remove up to 72% more plaque compared to leading electric toothbrushes. Dyson’s entry into the competitive toothbrush market comes amid a plethora of advanced models that promise various benefits, including stain removal and tongue cleaning. For instance, the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean retails for around £600.
Despite the high price tag, the British Dental Association (BDA) emphasizes that effective oral hygiene does not require expensive gadgets. Eddie Crouch, chair of the BDA, cautioned that patients should not rely solely on high-tech solutions but should adhere to regular dental care routines.
