End of the epoch: MTV closes in Europe

The cult channel MTV, owned by the Paramount film company, is ending broadcasting in the UK and EU countries after 30 years of operation. Thus, after December 31, 2025, five music channels will end their broadcasting at once – MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live.

Only the flagship channel, MTV HD, will remain on the air, focusing on reality shows, particularly Naked Dating UK and Geordie Shore.

According to the NME, the decision is related to changing viewer habits, as people are now more likely to watch clips on YouTube and social networks rather than on television. Another reason may be the media holding’s new strategy aimed at reducing costs by $ 500 million.

Recall that MTV began broadcasting in the USA in 1981. It quickly gained the attention of the public thanks to video clips featuring bright and charismatic hosts. The first such video to be broadcast was the song Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles.
