EU to fine Apple and Meta amid escalating trade war with the US

Apple to present iPhone 16 line on September 9

This week, the European Commission will fine Apple and Meta for violating the European Union’s digital competition rules. This move will draw the tech giants into the trade war between the United States and the EU, Politico writes about.

The European Commission is to announce the results of a three-year investigation into violations of the Digital Markets Act. Therefore, Apple and Meta are expected to receive fines.

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington will review the EU Digital Markets Act, which sets out the rules for technology companies in the European market. This could lead to reciprocal duties.

“It’s not just about fines – it’s about the Commission putting successful American companies in a position to succeed simply because they are American while letting Chinese and European competitors go,” a source close to the Meta investigation told Politico.

Instead, the US may target EU rules considering non-tariff barriers, including the Law mentioned above.

The European Commission is planning to fine Apple for the rules for developers that prohibit them from notifying iPhone users about special offers. Meta will be fined for using personal data that violates the rules of the Digital Markets Act.
