The first all-electric Ferrari Luce has become the most expensive new car ever sold at auction. An exclusive version of the model sold for $40 million at a charity auction at Sotheby’s in California. The sale is said to be a “tailor-made” version of the Ferrari Luce.
The result surpassed Ferrari’s record set a year earlier, when a Daytona SP3 sold for $26 million.
Ferrari introduced the Luce in May. The starting price was 550,000 euros ($636,356), sparking a wave of criticism and a drop in the company’s share price.
The launch of its first electric car was a major milestone for a company that has been associated with combustion-engine sports cars for decades. “Custom” cars are unique vehicles built to the buyer’s exact specifications.
