FIFA lifts Folarin Balogun’s suspension following Trump’s intervention

Trump threatens Google with a lawsuit for “bad stories” about him in the search engine

The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has decided to lift the suspension of United States National Team forward Folarin Balogun but placed him on a one-year probation period. This decision is based on Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which permits the partial or full suspension of the enforcement of a penalty. If the player commits a similar offense during the probation period, the suspension will be reinstated.

This decision followed news of a phone call from US President Donald Trump to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, seeking a review of the disciplinary action against Balogun. Earlier, on July 2, Balogun was sent off in the 64th minute during a match between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina for a foul against defender Tarik Muharemović, an incident recorded by referee Raphael Klaus.

President Trump expressed his gratitude to FIFA via social media for their reconsideration, describing it as the rectification of an “injustice.” Meanwhile, US National Team head coach Mauricio Pochettino regarded the repeal of the suspension as fair. However, he emphasized his non-involvement in the decision-making process.

FIFA’s ruling has sparked discussion among tournament participants; for instance, Belgium’s national team, scheduled to face the US in the round of 16, announced its intent to explore further measures to uphold the principles of fair play and protect the rights of all teams.

The suspension’s revocation was unexpected, as it was previously believed that such decisions could not be reversed under existing mechanisms.
