From iPhone 16 to UEFA: what was most often googled in the world

Google has published the final ranking of the most popular user queries worldwide for 2024.

Most of all, people googled the Copa América, followed by another football tournament, the UEFA European Championship. Interestingly, six of the top ten most popular searches were for sporting events.

People were also searched for Liam Payne, the One Direction singer who died in Buenos Aires in October. Investigators found that he lost consciousness and fell out of a window without trying to reflexively protect himself during the fall. US President-elect Donald Trump is in fifth place, and Princess Kate Middleton of Wales rounded out the top ten. Here is the complete list:

  • Copa América;
  • UEFA European Championship
  • Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup;
  • India;
  • Liam Payne;
  • Donald Trump;
  • India vs. Bangladesh;
  • iPhone 16;
  • Paris 2024 Olympic Games;
  • Kate, Princess of Wales.

It is important to note that the Year in Search highlights the Google queries that grew in popularity in 2024, mainly which “had a high traffic spike for a long period in 2024 compared to 2023.” If the ranking were based only on the most popular queries, “weather” would remain a constant favorite, so it is not included.

Here, you can read what Ukrainians googled in 2024. Among the top queries are blackout schedules, events in Suzhou, and Dubai chocolate.
