The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) press service reported that LinkedIn has been fined €310 million for illegally processing users’ personal data in the EU to display targeted advertising.
The Microsoft-owned company was given three months to align its data processing procedures with the EU General Data Protection Regulation.
DPC Deputy Chairman Graham Doyle said LinkedIn’s data processing without an appropriate legal basis is a “clear and serious violation of the fundamental right of individuals to personal data protection.”
LinkedIn was accused of not informing users about the use of their data.
LinkedIn itself clarified that the case is related to claims made in 2018. The company believes that it complies with the GDPR but has promised to do everything to ensure that its advertising practices comply with the DPC’s latest decision.
