Director and screenwriter Drew Goddard has confirmed that work on the fifth part of the Matrix franchise is ongoing.
After the franchise was revived in 2021, The Matrix: Resurrections grossed $160 million on a $190 million budget and failed to recoup its costs. However, Warner Bros. announced in 2024 that they were working on a new film, with Goddard writing the script.
It is also unknown whether Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, who played Neo and Trinity in the previous parts, will return to their roles. The actor played Neo in all four films.
The last film, The Matrix: Resurrections, received a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was met with mixed reviews from critics. The film was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, with simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max releases likely affecting box-office results.
Previous installments in the franchise have grossed significantly more at the box office: The Matrix grossed $467 million, The Matrix Reloaded grossed $741 million, and The Matrix Revolutions grossed $427 million. After the third film in 2003, the studio spent nearly two decades trying to return to the universe, and Lana Wachowski eventually agreed to direct a fourth installment. Production was hampered by the pandemic.
