The Met Gala, the annual charity ball of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is traditionally held in New York on the first Monday of May. This year’s theme is Tailored for You, and the official title of the exhibition is Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
The exhibition focuses on black men’s style as a way of self-expression, freedom, and resistance. The inspiration came from a book by guest curator Monica Miller, Professor of African Studies at Barnard College, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The exhibit features 12 themed sections, including “Freedom,” “Style,” and “Presence.”
This year’s carpeting was dark blue with a scattered flower pattern. The hall, as at the last ball, was decorated with plants and hundreds of floating petals.
Anna Wintour, Chairman of the Costume Institute, wore a silver Louis Vuitton dress embroidered with flowers and a blue floor-length jacket.
This year, viewers found the images of the Jenner-Kardashian family incomprehensible. Kim wore a tight black dress from Chrome Hearts, Kylie wore an outfit from Ferragamo, and Kendall wore a textured gray suit from Torishéju.
Zendaya appeared on the red carpet in a white tuxedo with a Louis Vuitton vest and hat and Demi Moore in a Thom Browne gown.
Rihanna also appeared on the red carpet of the Met Gala 2025 with a rounded tummy – the singer is pregnant for the 3rd time. She posed in a striped suit by Marc Jacobs: a corset top, a shortened jacket, a button-down shirt, and a wool skirt with a high slit.
This year’s Met Gala raised a record $31 million from ticket sales alone, the largest amount in its 77-year history. The entire amount will support the Costume Institute.
