NVIDIA to Launch Bitcoin Mining in Space This Year

Nvidia shares hit a new all-time high

Starcloud, a company backed by Nvidia, plans to start mining bitcoin in space this year, when its second spacecraft is launched into orbit. The startup’s CEO, Philip Johnston, wrote on X that Starcloud will be the first company to mine bitcoin outside of Earth.

According to Johnston, launching ASIC miners in space is “one of the most promising applications” of orbital computing power. The key argument is the cost of the equipment per kilowatt of power consumed.

Starcloud was founded in early 2024 to build space data centers to meet the growing energy needs of AI. In November 2025, the company launched a satellite with an NVIDIA H100 GPU into orbit, the first time such a powerful graphics processor has been used in space. Starcloud’s orbital infrastructure, which includes about 88,000 satellites, is powered primarily by solar energy.
