Nvidia Corp. plans to resume shipments of H20 AI chips to China after receiving assurances from Washington that they will be approved. This was reported in a statement published on the Nvidia website.
“The US government has assured Nvidia that the H20 export license will be issued, and the company hopes to begin shipping these chips soon,” the statement said.
The company has created a specialized version of AI chips for the Chinese market, taking into account the restrictions previously imposed by Washington on the supply of semiconductor components to the US. However, in April, the US authorities banned Nvidia from selling these chips to China without special permission.
The news that the White House would allow Nvidia to sell H20 chips to China came while Huang was visiting Beijing.
The Nvidia CEO announced that the company was developing a new AI chip for the Chinese market, which he said would help automate manufacturing and logistics. The chip is based on Nvidia’s cutting-edge Blackwell architecture. Still, a number of its features have been downgraded to comply with current US restrictions on technology exports to China, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing informed sources.
The US decision to allow Nvidia to supply H20 chips to China was seen by Beijing as a gesture of goodwill in trade negotiations, the sources said. Access to advanced semiconductor technologies is one of the top priorities for Chinese negotiators.
