OpenAI has officially confirmed its intentions to enter the consumer electronics market. Chris Lehane, the company’s director of global affairs, said during a speech at the Axios House event in Davos that the development of the first device is on schedule. Its presentation is expected in the second half of 2026.
Sam Altman has long kept the company’s hardware plans intriguing, especially after the acquisition of legendary Apple designer Jony Ive’s firm last year. While official specifications are kept secret, the developers’ key theses give some idea:
- No screen: most of the prototypes are compact devices without a display, focused on voice and gesture interaction.
- Smartphone alternative: Altman describes the upcoming gadget as more “calm” than a smartphone. Users will be amazed by how simple it is.
- Form factor: options range from a smart brooch to a headset or smart glasses.
