OpenAI is investing over 300 million Singapore dollars (approximately $234 million) in developing Singapore’s AI ecosystem and establishing its first applied artificial intelligence lab outside the United States. The project is being implemented as part of a strategic partnership with the Singaporean government to bolster the city-state’s technological ambitions, Bloomberg reports.
The multi-year program will enable the developer of ChatGPT to expand the team at its Singapore office, which opened in late 2024, to over 200 technical specialists. The project is set to be the company’s first AI hub outside the U.S.
The lab will support the implementation of AI across sectors such as public services, finance, healthcare, and digital infrastructure, while collaborating with local startups.
The administration of Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has officially designated AI as a strategic priority, focusing on training citizens and adapting the labor market to rapid changes.
