Peter Jackson Receives Honorary Palme d'Or in Cannes

On Tuesday, May 12, the 79th Cannes International Film Festival kicked off in Cannes. The international jury was introduced at the opening ceremony, and the Palme d’Or was awarded for its contribution to the development of cinema.

One of the main characters of the opening ceremony was New Zealand director and screenwriter Peter Jackson. He received the honorary Palme d’Or in Cannes for his contribution to the development of cinema. After all, this year marks 25 years since the premiere of the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. He received the award from the performer of the main role in his trilogy, Frodo Baggins, a cult blockbuster, Elijah Wood.

The Lord of the Rings is one of the most successful film projects. The three films of the trilogy received a total of 17 Oscars.

Traditionally, at the opening of the festival, the international jury was introduced, which would select the winners from among the 22 films in the Main Competition Program. This year’s president of the jury is South Korean director Park Chan-wook. The jury includes American actress Demi Moore, Irish actress Ruth Negga, Belgian director and screenwriter Laura Wandel, Oscar-winning Chinese director Chloe Zhao, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, Chilean director Diego Cespedes, French actor Isaac De Bankole, and British screenwriter Paul Laverty.
