Prada accused of cultural appropriation

The world-famous fashion brand Prada found itself at the center of a scandal over its new collection presented at Milan Men’s Fashion Week. The catwalk featured leather shoes that the Indian public recognized as traditional Kolhapuris, named after the city of Kolhapur.

They are handmade from genuine buffalo or goat leather without the use of metal elements. They are distinguished by an open toe, thick sole, and exquisite embroidery. The sole provides excellent shock absorption, and the open toe allows the foot to breathe. In 2019, the Indian government granted these sandals Geographical Indication (GI) status, which confirms that the product originates from a specific region and serves as a mark of authenticity and cultural heritage.

Indian artisans and activists noted that the brand failed to indicate the cultural origin of the footwear, instead describing it as a standard leather model. The craftsmen said they were particularly hurt by the huge price difference. While such sandals can be bought in India for $12, Prada offers their equivalent for almost $850.

Later, Prada representatives clarified that their design was inspired by Indian kolhapuris and updated the description on their official resources.
