Scientists find 303 ancient drawings with the help of AI

Using artificial intelligence, Japanese scientists have discovered 303 ancient drawings in the Peruvian desert.

This was reported by NewScientis and ITmedia.

The scientists studied an area of almost 400 square kilometers. Since it was difficult to visually inspect all the aerial photographs and inspect the entire territory, they decided to use artificial intelligence to analyze aerial photographs. For this purpose, the IBM Research Institute developed an artificial intelligence model with high performance even with a small amount of training data. Now, it is possible to identify areas with a high probability of geoglyphs.

Archaeologists have linked these drawings to the Nazca people, who began creating geoglyphs almost 2,000 years ago.

These geoglyphs are smaller and older than the Nazca lines, and others found earlier. The newly discovered images depict humanoid figures and pets nearly 9 meters long. Some of them even hint at human victims, with decapitated heads and killer whales armed with blades.

The discovery rate has increased 16 times thanks to AI, and the number of figurative geoglyphs already found has almost doubled.
