The list of 17 artists and bands nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year includes both first-time and repeat inductees. According to the rules, musicians can be nominated 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording.
The contenders include Jeff Buckley, Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Oasis. Oasis and Mariah Carey are nominated for the second time.
Among the first-time inductees are Phil Collins (as a solo artist), Pink, Shakira, Luther Vandross, Melissa Etheridge, and the bands INXS and New Edition. Among those being re-nominated are The Black Crowes, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, and Sade.
Colombian singer Shakira could become one of the few Latin American musicians to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
As the publication noted, the Wu-Tang Clan nomination came after criticism from Gene Simmons of Kiss, who previously said that hip-hop artists did not “belong” in the Hall of Fame.
The jury usually selects six to eight artists from the list of nominees for inclusion. The names of the new members will be announced in April, and the ceremony will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, in the fall.
