The French President and the Mayor of Rome argue over "Emily in Paris"

French President Emmanuel Macron unexpectedly commented on reports that the events of the popular TV series Emily in Paris, which airs on the Netflix streaming platform, will be moved to Rome. Earlier, the series’ creators announced that its main characters would travel to the Italian capital at the end of the fourth season.

Macron assured France it would “fight hard” to ensure the series continues developing in this country.

The French President believes that the movie has positively impacted the country’s attractiveness and contributed to the influx of tourists to the capital, trade, and real estate inquiries.

“We will ask them to stay in Paris. ‘Emily in Paris’ in Rome is a kind of nonsense,” the French President emphasized.

In response, Rome’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, suggested that Macron not interfere.

“Dear Emmanuel Macron, don’t worry: Emily is having a good time in Rome. And you can’t tell the heart. Let her choose for herself,” he wrote on his page on the social network X.

Later, in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Gualtieri added:

“Doesn’t President Macron have more important things to do? I would like to believe, or at least hope, that he was joking. After all, Macron should know that an international company like Netflix does not obey orders from heads of state and does not make decisions under pressure,” the mayor of the Italian capital said.

As a reminder, the plot of Emily in Paris revolves around 20-year-old American Emily Cooper, played by actress Lily Collins. She moved from Chicago to Paris and enjoyed the good life in the French capital. The series is one of the most watched on Netflix, and the streaming platform has decided to extend it for a fifth season, which will take place in Rome.
