Popular performer The Weeknd has been named an honorary citizen of Toronto, receiving the key to the city. The Toronto government officially honored the musician in recognition of his contributions to the city’s social life and culture, according to People.

The artist was presented with a special award during a private ceremony attended by Mayor Olivia Chow.

In response, the 35-year-old performer announced the launch of several social projects to support young people in the area where he grew up and studied. In particular, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute, which Abel once attended, will feature a space for creativity, including a dance studio, audio lab, sensory room, and a mobile recording studio for the local youth club.
