On Saturday, May 24, the 78th Cannes Film Festival ended, where talented directors presented their works.
Iranian director Jafar Panahi awarded the Palme d’Or to A Simple Accident. This is the artist’s first film after his release from prison. It tells the story of an Iranian man, his pregnant wife, and his young daughter who get into a minor car accident, which triggers a series of unpredictable events.
The festival’s Grand Prix went to Sentimental Value by Norwegian Joakim Trier, which fascinated the jury with its emotional depth. The Best Director Award went to Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho for his dynamic thriller The Secret Agent. Actor Wagner Moura, who played the lead role in this film, was recognized as the best actor.
French artist of Maghrebi descent Nadia Melliti won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her first-ever performance in a film, “The Little Sister” by Hafsia Herzi.
The award for Best Screenplay went to Young Mothers, created by brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne.
Finally, this year’s special jury prize went to Resurrection by Bi Gan, and the main jury prize was shared by two films — Sirât by Oliver Laschet and The Sound of Falling by Masha Shilinsky. Taufik Barom’s I’ll Be Happy If You Die Now won the short film category, a provocative title that sparked lively discussions among the audience and critics.
