WHO: Europeans drink almost 9 liters of alcohol per year on average

In 2024, the World Health Organization conducted a significant study on the physical condition and morbidity among residents of 53 European countries, including Ukraine. This report is published every three years.

The analysis showed that the average life expectancy of women in the European region is 79.3 years. They are in good health 84.1% of the time. At the same time, men have a shorter life expectancy of 73.3 years and are in good health 88.1% of the time.

One in six Europeans dies as a result of non-communicable diseases before the age of 70. These are, in particular, cardiovascular diseases, which account for 33.5% of deaths, cancer (32.8% of deaths), diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases.

In addition, according to the organization, residents of European countries are world leaders in alcohol consumption. On average, one adult consumes 8.8 liters of alcohol per year. The smoking rate also remains high at 25.3%.

Hans Henry Kluge emphasizes that global warming is worsening the incidence rates. Every year, about 175,000 people die in the region due to factors related to climate change.

As for children, according to the WHO, almost one in three schoolchildren in Europe is overweight, and one in six is obese. Every tenth teenager aged 13-15 smokes, including e-cigarettes.
