YouTube has updated the way it counts views in Shorts

European Commission investigates the impact of YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat on mental health

YouTube is changing how it counts views in Shorts to help content creators better understand how their short videos perform.

This was reported by TechCrunch.

Previously, a view was counted only after a certain number of seconds of watching Shorts. Now, YouTube counts every time a video starts playing or repeats, increasing the total number of views.

YouTube claims content creators want to see more clearly how often their videos are noticed. Thanks to the update, they can better assess their impact and present content to brands.

In general, YouTube Shorts will now count views in the same way as TikTok and Instagram Reels. At the same time, the old metric – “engaged views” – will remain in the Advanced Mode section of YouTube Analytics, which shows how many people watch a video for more than a few seconds.

The update will be launched on March 31.
