The animated film Zootopia 2 has set a new box office record for Walt Disney Animation Studios. The film’s worldwide gross has reached $1.46 billion, making it the highest-grossing Disney animated film ever.
Zootopia 2 thus surpassed the previous record holder, Frozen 2, which grossed $1.45 billion in 2019.
According to box-office figures, the film has grossed $333 million in North America and $1.13 billion internationally. During the Christmas weekend, in its fifth week of release, the box office increased by another $87.9 million. The film crossed the $1 billion mark in just 17 days of release, becoming the fastest PG-rated film to do so.
Zootopia 2 has been particularly successful in China. In this market, many Hollywood films have not achieved high box-office returns in recent years. At the Chinese box office alone, the animation has already exceeded $500 million, the highest for an American film. The closest to this result was another recent Disney release – Avatar: Fire and Ash, which, after its December 19 premiere, is approaching $100 million in China.
In total, only three films crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office this year. In addition to Zootopia 2, this is the Disney live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch, which collected $1.03 billion, as well as the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2, which became the highest-grossing film of the year, with more than $2.2 billion.
