A woman will become governor of the Vatican - for the first time in history

In March, Pope Francis will appoint Raffaella Petrini, a nun, as governor of the Vatican. For the first time in history, a woman will hold this position.

Since 2021, Petrini has served as Secretary General of the Vatican Governorate. As head of the city-state government, she will replace Archbishop Fernando Verghese Alsaga, who will turn 80 in March.

In January 2025, the pontiff appointed Italian nun Simone Brambilla head of the department that governs the Catholic Church’s religious orders. She became the first woman in history to head a Vatican department.
