Academy Updates Oscar Participation Rules Considering AI and Multiple Actor Nominations

Oscars 2026: winners of the year's main film award announced

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced revised regulations for the Oscars, outlining clear requirements regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to these updates, only roles performed by humans and officially credited in the cast list will qualify for acting awards, while screenplays must be authored strictly by humans. The organization reserves the right to request additional information regarding the use of AI in the filmmaking process and the role of human input.

Additionally, the rules for the category “Best International Feature Film” have been significantly modified: nominations can now be granted not only based on national selections but also for victories at leading international film festivals such as Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Busan, and Sundance. This change allows countries to receive multiple nominations.

A notable alteration is that the award in this category will now be presented to the director, whose name will appear on the statuette and in official nominees’ lists, rather than to the country.

Regarding acting nominations, the changes allow the same actor to be nominated for multiple roles within a single category. In contrast, previously, only the role with the highest support was considered for nomination.

Moreover, updates affect other categories and procedures, including increasing the number of honorees in the casting category, introducing a shortlist of 20 films for consideration in the cinematographic work category, and clarifying voting and submission guidelines.

Furthermore, the Academy has announced the dates for the 99th and 100th Academy Awards ceremonies, scheduled for 2027 and 2028, respectively. These ceremonies will be the last to be broadcast on the ABC channel before the shift to YouTube for future broadcasts.
