The Royal Mint of Great Britain has announced the release of collector coins to mark the 30th anniversary of the British pop group Spice Girls. The series is timed to coincide with the anniversary of the release of their debut single “Wannabe” and their 1996 album “Spice”.
The Spice Girls became the first female group to be included in the “Legends of Music” series.
After the release of “Wannabe”, the group quickly gained popularity. It became one of the symbols of 1990s pop culture. The Spice Girls released several hits, including “2 Become 1”, “Mama”, “Who Do You Think You Are”, “Spice Up Your Life”, and “Viva Forever”. Their work and public image were often associated with the slogan “girl power”.
The coin design was created by artist Fionn Rees. The reverse features all five original members of the band – Victoria Beckham, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, and Melanie Brown – presented in silhouette, each with an autograph.
