The Chinese authorities are preparing their response to Donald Trump’s tariffs on countries, and one of them may be a ban on screening American films in local cinemas.
This is not the Chinese government’s official plan, but rather the opinions of experts who assess the situation and predict countermeasures.
Thus, according to them, the ban on film imports can greatly affect box office receipts. For example, the movie adaptation of Minecraft started in the US with $162 million. In comparison, the box office in China amounted to $14.5 million. The difference is enormous, but it is 10% of the global box office, and only the UK was higher – $19 million.
Last year’s Venom grossed in China second only to Mexico, the UK, and the US. Deadpool and Wolverine grossed a solid $60 million.
If China imposes an import ban, it could hit the box office of Superman, Fantastic Four, Jurassic World: The Revenant, and a dozen other blockbusters released in 2025.
China’s official position is currently unknown.
