Director of the animated film “Ratatouille,” Brad Bird, has officially announced that he has no intention of creating a continuation of the main character Remy’s story. According to him, Pixar Studios has approached him about a sequel several times, but he has consistently declined.
In an interview with Collider, Bird stated, “No,” when asked about his desire to create “Ratatouille 2.” He explained that the studio’s management has repeatedly and very delicately asked for his thoughts on the project, jokingly but with a serious undertone, suggesting its potential. At the same time, he emphasized, “We’ve already told this story.”
The director also noted that the success of any movie or animated film often breeds expectations for a sequel. As an example, he mentioned the animated film “The Iron Giant,” which initially did not achieve box office success but later found its audience. However, Bird stressed that the story is complete, and he sees no reason for a continuation.
Earlier in June, actor Patton Oswalt, the voice behind Remy, expressed a willingness to return to the role should a new project involving Brad Bird be undertaken. At the same time, he wished for the sequel to be driven by a strong creative vision rather than merely the desire to create a continuation.
Given the director’s stance, a continuation of “Ratatouille” is not currently in the studio’s plans.
The animated film “Ratatouille” was released in 2007 and tells the story of a rat named Remy who dreams of becoming a chef in Paris. The film received several Oscar nominations, including categories for original screenplay, music, and sound. It grossed $623 million worldwide, making it the sixth highest-grossing film of 2007.
Currently, Brad Bird is focusing on developing the third installment of the “The Incredibles” franchise for Pixar.
