Mexican artist Frida Kahlo’s self-portrait “The Dream” (El sueño) sold for $54.7 million at a Sotheby’s auction in New York.
This amount became a record among all paintings ever sold by women. The buyer’s name is not disclosed.
The canvas, also known as “The Bed” (La cama), was created in 1940 and is a self-portrait of Kahlo: the artist depicted herself sleeping on a bed with a skeleton lying on the canopy. According to Sotheby’s, Frida did indeed sleep under a similar canopy with a papier-mâché skeleton.
