According to a local newspaper, the authorities of the North Sea island of Vangerøhe are seeking candidates for mayor.
This was reported by Spiegel.
Representatives of the Christian Democratic Union, the Social Democratic Party of Germany, and the Union 90/Greens made the decision to publicly search for the island’s head. The Vangeroge administration lacks qualified specialists.
The announcement states that a candidate for a leadership position in the town hall must live on the island, have a university degree or career qualification for administrative service, and have relevant professional experience. The mayor can be a person between the ages of 23 and 67 who is a citizen of Germany or an EU member state. The term of office is eight years.
The election date is set for August 17. Interested candidates can apply until June 14; one person has already done so. This is not the first time the island has resorted to such a strategy: in 2024, the authorities were looking for a caretaker of the old lighthouse, the main attraction of Vangeroge. More than a thousand people took part in the competition for the position.
Seven years ago, after the unexpected death of the then-mayor, political parties advertised for a new mayor through newspapers. Marcel Fangor, who saw the ad, headed the town hall. His position has been vacant since he resigned in 2023.
