Google has announced a new line of laptops named Googlebook, featuring an innovative Magic Pointer smart cursor powered by the Gemini artificial intelligence. This tool provides contextual assistance based on the content displayed on the screen, enhancing user productivity. According to Alexander Kuscher, Senior Director of Android-based Tablets and Laptops, the goal was to make the cursor truly intelligent, providing users with background support.
The Googlebook is compatible with Android smartphones, allowing mobile apps to be directly launched on the laptop and enabling access to phone files via a file manager. Additionally, the Create your Widget feature lets users create personalized widgets by integrating information from the internet and Google services, including Gmail and Calendar, to streamline planning activities such as trips.
These new devices will replace the Chromebook line that has existed for 15 years. Existing Chromebook users will continue to receive support, and some models will be eligible for an upgrade to the new AI-powered Android-based operating system. This move aligns with Google’s strategy to compete with Microsoft’s Copilot+, which was announced for release in 2024.
The plan to unify Chrome OS and Android into a single platform was officially announced in the fall of 2025. While Microsoft’s market share in AI-driven computers was less than 2% at the start of 2025, analysts anticipate significant growth in this sector by 2026.
