The film “Nimrods,” inspired by the origins of the rock band Green Day, is set to premiere in theaters on August 14. The project was previously introduced under the title “New Year’s Drive” and was showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025. This production is a collaboration between Live Nation Studios and Inaugural Entertainment.
The narrative centers on three high school students who embark on a journey based on the mistaken belief that their young music band has been invited to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. The story partially reflects the band’s real-life phase when its members lived in a van before the release of their 1994 album “Dookie,” which brought them global recognition and a Grammy award.
The cast features Mason Thames, McKenna Grace, Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Sean Gunn, Bobby Lee, and Fred Armisen. Directed by Lee Kirk, who previously worked with the band’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, on “Ordinary World,” the movie takes its title from Green Day’s 1997 album “Nimrod,” which includes the track “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life).” The production has been overseen by the band members themselves: Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool.
Simultaneously, filming has commenced in Hamburg, Munich, and Liverpool for the series “Hamburg Days,” which focuses on The Beatles’ early career while in Germany. The creators have announced the main cast of this six-episode drama.
