In the UK, a woman who was born without a uterus has become the first mother after an organ transplant from a deceased donor. Doctors are calling this case a first in the country.
A boy named Hugo Richard was born in a London hospital, weighing 3.09 kg. He received his second name in honor of Professor Richard Smith, who began studying uterus transplants more than 25 years ago and was present during childbirth.
The boy’s mother, Grace Bell, works as an IT program manager and has Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKH), a rare congenital disorder in which the uterus is absent or underdeveloped. The woman learned that she would not be able to carry a child in her teens.
She called the birth of her son a “miracle.” The transplant was performed in 2024, after which the woman began infertility treatment. Her son was born in December of last year.
