Game of Thrones to Get Prequel on Stage

The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced the world premiere of Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a new play based on George R. R. Martin’s universe.

The adaptation was written by playwright Duncan MacMillan, directed by Dominic Cooke, and Martin himself serves as executive producer and story writer. The premiere is scheduled for the summer at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

After a long winter, a great tournament is held in Harengol, bringing together representatives of the main families – the Targaryens, Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Martells. While the feasts and knightly duels continue, a conspiracy against the Mad King is forming in the shadows, and the festive atmosphere is gradually replaced by tension and a sense of approaching war.

The authors of the adaptation explain that the action takes place long before the events of the series.
