Instagram has unveiled a new feature called ‘First Draft’ aimed at simplifying the editing process for Reels. Announced via a post on Threads, the feature automatically trims selected video clips and eliminates pauses, creating a cohesive initial cut in under 10 seconds.
This innovation is designed to save creators considerable editing time, making video production more accessible for those with limited experience in editing software. Instead of manually sifting through each clip, users can begin with a pre-assembled draft and refine it as needed.
Currently, ‘First Draft’ is being rolled out exclusively for iPhone users, accessible directly from Instagram’s camera while recording or from the Reels gallery after selecting multiple clips.
While not a groundbreaking development—similar automated editing tools are available in applications like Adobe Firefly’s Quick Cuts and CapCut’s Auto Cut—Instagram’s integration of this functionality within its app reduces the need for creators to transfer footage to external editors.
This year, Instagram has introduced a variety of creator tools, including a ‘Replace Audio’ feature that allows users to change the music on existing posts without needing to delete and re-upload. Additionally, the company is developing a new AI assistant for its video-editing app, Edits.
Instagram is also testing a ‘Series’ feature, enabling creators to group related Reels for sequential viewing, potentially transforming individual short videos into more structured content.
Notably, the announcement of ‘First Draft’ coincides with Instagram head Adam Mosseri’s expected testimony in Meta’s ongoing social media addiction trial. The lawsuit alleges that Meta designed Instagram and Facebook to promote compulsive use among children while neglecting to address associated risks. Meta has denied these claims.
