Keir Starmer Announces Resignation as UK Prime Minister

Keir Starmer, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Labour Party, has officially announced his resignation from both positions. He stated that this decision was made upon recognizing that his party members do not view him as the best candidate for the next parliamentary elections.

Starmer emphasized that coming to power in 2024 was a defining moment in his political career. According to him, the Labour Party’s return to government after a 14-year hiatus marked the beginning of a new phase for the country aimed at improving the lives of its citizens.

He reminded that he took leadership of the party six years ago during a significant crisis, a time when many experts doubted the prospect of its political recovery. Starmer stated that the revitalization was achieved through reform initiatives that overcame these doubts, including addressing antisemitism, restoring trust in the economic and security sectors, and strengthening the party’s position.

Reflecting on two years of governance, he highlighted key achievements, including economic growth, higher wages, increased investment, and improvements in healthcare and social welfare. Starmer also noted the increase in defense spending to its highest level since the Cold War, the reduction of illegal migration, and a decrease in child poverty rates.

The Prime Minister underscored the restoration of the United Kingdom’s international standing, which included entering into new trade agreements, supporting Ukraine, and strengthening ties with European allies.

He announced that the nomination process for a new leader of the Labour Party will begin on July 9. In the case of an uncontested election, the new Prime Minister could assume office by mid-July. In contrast, a contested election might delay the transition until late August. Starmer pledged to remain in office to oversee the transition of power until the process concludes.

Concluding his address, he expressed gratitude to his team, civil servants, and family, mentioning his intent to dedicate more time to family matters following his resignation.
