Peter Serafinowicz Cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO's "Harry Potter" Series

Actor Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s new series set within the Harry Potter universe. This character, one of the most well-known ghosts of Hogwarts, is beloved by readers of the book series but did not appear in the original film franchise.

Peter Serafinowicz recently participated in the live-action adaptation of “How to Train Your Dragon.” His previous credits include roles in the series “Parks and Recreation” and the films “John Wick: Chapter 2” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The appearance of Peeves in this series will mark the character’s first onscreen adaptation.

Historically, the role of Peeves was assigned to British comedian Rik Mayall in the original cinematic series. However, due to time constraints, scenes featuring the character were ultimately removed. Rik Mayall mentioned that he was compensated for filming but did not ultimately appear in the film. Despite this, he was invited to the premiere, where he gave his tickets to his children, who mistakenly thought he was playing another character because of his makeup.

The new HBO series is conceptualized as a detailed adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s book series, planned to span seven seasons, each corresponding to one of the novels. Dominick McLaughlin will take on the role of Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton portrays Hermione Granger, and Alistair Stout will play Ron Weasley.

The main cast will also include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Francesca Gardiner serves as screenwriter and executive producer. The series is set to premiere this December exclusively on HBO and HBO Max, while work on the second season is already underway.

The project’s executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
