Liechtenstein to join the International Monetary Fund

EU to Issue €65 Billion in Bonds by Year-End

Liechtenstein held a referendum on the country’s accession to the International Monetary Fund. 55.8% of citizens were in favor and 44.2% were against.

This was reported by the Europe Elects organization.

Negotiations on Liechtenstein’s membership in the IMF have been ongoing since the fall of 2022. In March and April 2024, Liechtenstein fulfilled all the requirements for joining the IMF – The Executive Board and the Board of Governors of the Fund approved the country’s membership by an overwhelming majority.

Liechtenstein’s authorities noted that joining the IMF would help the country “strengthen the reputation and visibility of business,” protect against financial risks, and intensify economic relations with other countries. In addition, the principality wants to establish itself as an international financial center.

Currently, 190 countries are members of the International Monetary Fund.
