Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse had the second-highest opening weekend in film history, taking in $927 million in its opening weekend. If the film continues its current pace, it could cross the $2 billion mark.
Sony and Marvel’s new film starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker has earned $355 million in the US and another $572 million in international markets in 66 countries. The total worldwide opening weekend gross has reached $927 million.
This puts Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in second place among all films in history, behind only Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $1.2 billion in 2019. Third place goes to “Avengers: Infinity War”, which in 2018 collected $640 million in its first weekend.
The film received the largest international box office in China, where it earned $121 million in its opening weekend. It was followed by the United Kingdom with $49 million, Mexico with $38.3 million, and South Korea with $25 million.
In addition, the film set new opening box office records in several countries, including France ($26.6 million), India ($31.8 million), Brazil ($23.8 million) and Spain ($15.6 million).
Variety notes that such a successful start in China suggests the film could exceed $2 billion at the global box office. In the entire history of global distribution, only seven films have reached this milestone.
The previous installment of the franchise grossed $1.9 billion in 2021, despite not being released in China. While recent Hollywood blockbusters have not always performed well in China, Peter Parker’s story remains a popular one among local audiences.
The new film also set box office records in premium formats. In Dolby, the film earned $10 million in the US; in 4DX, $17 million worldwide; and in ScreenX, $14.4 million.
The film received 90% favorable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
