Nicolas Cage Officially Adopts a New Name

Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage, widely recognized as an Academy Award-winning performer, has officially changed his name, choosing to forgo his original surname, Coppola. Born Nicolas Kim Coppola, the 62-year-old actor shared this decision in an interview with Variety, noting that he made it last year.

It is worth mentioning that Cage is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and the cousin of Sofia Coppola. The decision to adopt a new name was influenced by his desire to establish a career independent of familial affiliations. According to the actor, his new name — Nick Cage — represents both his personal life and professional endeavors, signifying an autonomous and fitting step for his identity.

The surname “Cage” was inspired by the Marvel comic character Luke Cage and the avant-garde composer John Cage, both of whom hold special significance to him. The actor emphasized the importance of selecting a name that was short, sonorous, and easy to remember, like James Dean.

Regarding his first name, Nicolas Cage revealed that his father intentionally chose the French spelling Nicholas, omitting the letter “h,” which initially appeared unusual to him. Nevertheless, he expressed acceptance of both forms of address — Nick or Nicolas — and acknowledged both as valid.

Ultimately, this name change reflects the actor’s strategic decision concerning his branding and positioning within the film industry.
