Pope Francis dies on Easter Monday

On Monday, April 21, Pope Francis died at 88.

In the last few years, his papacy had been marked by several hospital visits and concerns about his health. Recently, he was diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.

Cardinal Farrell announced his death in a statement released by the Vatican. He said, “Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow, I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis.”

Pope Francis has held the Apostolic See since 2013. His original name was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and he previously served as a bishop in Buenos Aires. An estimated 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide will mourn Francis’ passing.
