Sacha Baron Cohen is poised to take center stage in Quentin Tarantino’s inaugural play, The Popinjay Cavalier, a comedic adventure set to premiere in early 2027.
The creator of iconic characters like Ali G and Borat is reportedly cast as the titular character in this vibrant comedy, described as a “rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise” set against the backdrop of 1830s Europe. Tarantino, who will also direct, has expressed his commitment to the project, planning to relocate to England with his family to dedicate 18 to 24 months to its development.
Presented by Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment, The Popinjay Cavalier was first announced in March, with a West End theatre venue yet to be confirmed. Tarantino’s dedication to the theatrical experience has been highlighted by producer Sonia Friedman, who noted his keen interest in ensuring audiences enjoy an unforgettable night at the theatre.
Despite his success in film and television, Baron Cohen has yet to take on a leading role in a major stage production. He trained under renowned clowning teacher Philippe Gaulier, whose influence he credits for his comedic career. Following Gaulier’s passing earlier this year, Baron Cohen reflected on the profound impact the mentor had on his life and work.
Previously, Tarantino cast Baron Cohen in a minor role in the 2012 film Django Unchained, but the actor withdrew to star in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Les Misérables. As anticipation builds for Ali G: Who Iz I?, set to release next month, publicists for both Baron Cohen and The Popinjay Cavalier have yet to confirm the casting details.
