Shares of McDonald's fell due to hamburger poisoning

One person has died, and dozens have been infected with E. coli after eating a McDonald’s Royalty Burger in 10 states, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. This was reported by Reuters.

What is known

Officials said the outbreak, linked to one of the most popular McDonald’s menu items, has sickened 49 people and hospitalized 10.

The identified strain of E. coli O157:H7 can cause severe illness and was the source of a 1993 outbreak that killed four children after eating undercooked hamburgers at Jack in the Box restaurants.

Most of the victims had eaten a royalty-free burger.

According to the CDC, all of those interviewed for the investigation reported eating at McDonald’s before becoming ill, and most mentioned the Royal Cheeseburger.

No specific ingredient linked to the illness has been identified. Still, investigators have focused on sliced fresh onions and beef patties.

Most of the patients are residents of Colorado and Nebraska.

Shares of the world’s largest fast-food chain fell almost 6% after the main session ended.
