Production of the sedan Model S and the SUV Model X at Tesla’s Fremont factory in California concluded on May 10, 2026, marked by an official ceremony bidding farewell to these models. According to the company, these vehicles played a key role in initiating the global transition to electric transportation and in advancing autonomous driving technology.
Shifting its focus towards the future of autonomous systems, Tesla has ceased manufacturing these flagship models. Elon Musk previously expressed his intent to discontinue production of the Model S and Model X, and this has now become a significant step in the company’s evolution beyond traditional electric vehicle manufacturing. Instead, the corporation’s efforts are now centered on the Optimus project — an autonomous bipedal humanoid robot designed to perform hazardous, repetitive, and monotonous tasks.
The second-generation Optimus (Tesla Bot) stands 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 125 pounds, and is equipped with Tesla’s artificial intelligence and sensors, enabling a wide range of automation capabilities.
