This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo.
This was announced by the Nobel Committee.
This is a movement of people who survived the atomic bomb attacks on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. These people are also called “hibakusha”. They were awarded the Peace Prize for their efforts to create a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through their witnesses that nuclear weapons can never be used again.
After the atomic bomb attack in August 1945, a global movement emerged to raise awareness of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. This resulted in an international norm that determined that the use of atomic weapons was morally unacceptable. This norm was called the “nuclear taboo.”
The Nobel Committee noted that no one has used nuclear weapons for 80 years since then. Therefore, there is now a concern that this taboo against the use of atomic weapons is under pressure today. They noted that modern nuclear weapons have much greater destructive power, which can kill millions of people and have a catastrophic impact on the climate. A nuclear war could destroy our civilization.
